(Primary) inguinal hernia
represents the most frequent pathologic condition in all operating
rooms worldwide. It is a disease that mainly concerns men
but also many women are affected. The term hernia derives
from a greek word (hernios) meaning sprout. In fact, hernias
are nothing less than the protrusion of an organ, organic part,
or any body structure through the wall that normally contains
it.
There are different types of abdominal hernias and that is
to say:
 |
inguinal and crural
hernias that can be located in the inguinal area; |
 |
umbilical and epigastric hernias
that can usually be found between the unbilicum and the
distal part of the sternum (xiphoid process); |
 |
other rare types of hernias in
different parts of the abdomen. |
The most frequent ones are inguinal. The most manifest clinical
evidence is the appearing of a swelling in the interested
region, the size of which can vary from a small cherry to
a large pineapple or watermelon.
However, several times, hernia might not clearly show externally
and can eventually be revealed by the appearing of symptoms
such as pain, heartburn and heaviness mainly while standing
up or sitting down when driving.
The above mentioned cases can be
diagnosed only by a medical visit . No pharmacological therapy
is useful.
All non surgical therapies are to
be avoided. ( Compressions, and sclerosing injections.)
Surgery is the only permanent solution for hernia.
